This month I’m in Dong Hoi, Vietnam, where it’s usually sunny and very cheap. It’s where most of the “Made in Vietnam” clothes for Chanel, Zara, Hermes, Burberry and every brand you can think of, are made. There must be many factories here.  I’ll be here for another couple of months.

In terms of LDC, I’ve been looking at where the investment opportunities lie. Most are inbound rather than outbound and they are often in education. And with the ongoing trade war between China and the US, an increasing number of factories are locating from China to Vietnam because of cheaper labour in Vietnam.

This month there has been more warring words in the Middle East, with the war in Yemen, and the ongoing dispute between Iran, Israel, the US, and the Gulf countries.

Camera issue fails to capture suppression of Arab Israeli vote

Israel goes to the polls for the second time this year on September 17.
This happened after the PM Benjamin Netanyahu failed to form a coalition government (he was elected as PM in April this year) the first time this had happened in Israel's history.

What happens in this upcoming election is crucial for Netanyahu's Likud Party (officially the Likud-National Liberal Movement), which plays to its right-wing conservative base. A bit like US president Donald Trump, which is why they get on so well, undoubtedly.
The article below explains how the Likud Party is manipulating the September election, and, as well as trying to suppress the Arab vote. Moreover, it also asks if Jews in the settlements should vote

Saudi Arabia’s and Yemen's war: the history

Yemen is a quagmire for supporters of the Hadi regime, who are seeking to overthrow the Houthi rebels, in particular  Saudi Arabia and the UAE, although the latter had  largely pulled out of the war.

President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, resides in Saudi Arabia and Aden has been the seat of power since he left the country in 2014. Yemen is a fascinating place, and it is one full of old rivals.

Migrant workers in Qatar hold rare strikes over conditions as 2022 World Cup looms
image

Qatar has had a rocky time since it was announced it would hold the World Cup 2022. The award was granted in 2010 amidst international criticism that the tournament should not be held there, not least because of the high temperatures. But at least November is slightly cooler than July.

One concern is that Qatar is an alcohol-free state but visitors to the country – which is expected to be 1.5 million in total- for the tournament can stay in a new complex, Lusail, that is being specially built. It is located 23km north of Doha and has good connections by road and rail.
I was in Qatar the day it found out it had won the bid. The man in charge was not surprised that Qatar had won. There are allegations of corruption, in the form of a hefty bribe. This has never been proved.
Since then I understand the number of planned stadia has been scaled back since, according to one consultant who was involved with the process, there was in fighting within the management group, especially the family. Other things appear to have been cut back as well.
Now, workers are going on strike- an unusual development for a Gulf State where unions are illegal and employers often exploit the workers.
Qatar is under the microscope with the World Cup looming.

Ageism is prejudice: call it what it is
image

There is also this article I wrote for a company I work with in the UK, called Behavioural Shift (www.behaviouralshift.com) Ageism is prejudice; it affects men and women; it is global. Ageism is when a person discriminates against another person on the basis of age.

It is faced by people over 50, in particular. Ageism is an ongoing issue and we at Behavioural Shift want to do what we can to combat it.

What we are up to

In answer to the numerous requests about public speaking, LDC is now offering speeches, after dinner and for special occasions, from January 2020. LDC has also joined with Behavioural Shift (www.behaviouralshift.com), a global company looking at pertinent issues of the day, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and ageism.

Meanwhile, there are still investment opportunities available in India, Sri Lanka and in the education sector in New Zealand. If you are interested in any of these opportunities, or anything else, contact lucia@luciadore.com
